  • Q: What is a Wireless LAN?
    A: Wireless LAN (WLAN) is typically an extension of a wired LAN. WLAN components convert data packets into radio waves send the to other wireless devices or to an access point that serves as a gateway to the wired LAN.

    Most WLAN's today are based on the IEEE 802.11 and 802.11b standards for wireless communication between devices and a LAN. Their standards permit data transmission at 1 to 2 Mbps or 5 to 11 Mbps, respectively, and specify a common architecture, transmission methods, and other aspects of wireless data transfer to improve interoperability among products.

    A wireless LAN has nothing to do with cellular telecommunications connections.

    Q: What is a Wireless LAN Card?
    A: A wireless LAN card is a PCMCIA card that plugs into your PC slot or a PCMCIA adapter. The external antenna connects to the wireless LAN card.

    Q: What is included in the setup equipment?
    A: The startup kit includes install CD, antenna (AVG. 12"x18"), radio modem card and 50' of wiring. Business customers will also need an Ethernet Converter.

    Q: Does this system require a clear line of sight from the local site antenna to the user?
    A: Yes, this technology can reach a customer 3.5 to 4 miles away from the antenna provided that there is a clear line of sight between the antenna and receiver/transmitter.

    Q: Is the daktel wireless service affected by adverse weather such as heavy rains or snow?
    A: Unlike Ku band satellite technology (the technology used with most entertainment satellites), daktel uses high frequency radio waves, which are not affected by heavy rains or snows.

    Q: Will I get a busy signal when trying to get on daktel's wireless service?
    A: No, since daktel has an "Always ON" service there are no phone lines, modems or other limitations to getting on the service.

    Q: Do you have e-mail as part of your service?
    A: Yes, you receive 3 e-mail addresses that can be customized to fit your particular needs.

    Q: What are the computer requirements to receive daktel's Wireless Internet Service?
    A: You simply need a Pentium II class PC or better with , 32 MB of RAM, 100 MB of free disk space, Windows 98 and an available PCI or ISA slot.

    Q: Basic Troubleshoot Steps if your Wireless Internet service is down.
    A:
    1. Unplug the power cord on the Ethernet converter and all other network devices for 10 seconds and plug back in.
    2. Shut down your computer for 10 seconds and turn back on.
    3. Double check that all cables connected to the Ethernet converter and your computer are plugged in.
